Katie, trying to hide her nervous laughter behind her hands. She’s not a fan of being photographed, so it took a while to get past that. A good Polaroid or 6 usually helps, as evidenced here.

This is a great interview with Daft Punk about their new album and their feelings on the music they hear these days. I feel similarly to them when it comes to all art really, that there are many things that come pre-programmed, hot of the assembly line and pushed out through computers, and that all too often these things fail to move you.

This is not to say all things made with a computer are bad. Not everything made with live instruments, or a film camera, or written in a Moleskine notebook comes out brilliantly. But sometimes the extra time and effort, the love and heart put into making things ‘the hard way” yields incredible results.

It just dawned on me a little while ago that I haven’t turned the radio in my car on for at least a month. I’m filtering out the massive waves of media, and only taking the best with me in all of the art forms that I like.

Sometimes, I have makeup artists paint my models white because I have odd ideas when I work overnight.

And sometimes, I like the aftermath when the makeup has been wiped off with a paper towel more than what we were actually going for.

I never tell anyone when I’m about to take a picture. There’s no countdown, no cue, just a photo at a moment you weren’t expecting it, and this is why.

I took 3 shots of Rose sitting in front of this giant (Rose? I don’t know flowers) bush, the first showing her rather stiffly waiting for me to take the shot, the second (this one) showing her start to fidget and relax a bit, and the third existing as evidence that making a model wait will get her to forget about posing completely.

Being (slightly) patient and uninformative pays off in the end.

Popped into Kristyn’s studio today and designated myself her documentarian for the day, peeking over paintings resting on an easel and tripping over art supplies as I tried to find the best angles to watch her work. Being able to record her work accomplishes much more than I set out to, because it allowed Kristyn to watch herself paint. That’s an odd thing, to watch yourself block out the rest of the world and create, time slipping by as you try to conjure more and more onto the surface of a blank canvas. I think this will be one of my favorite things to do for a long time.

Spring on Flickr.

First Polaroid of Spring (well, it’s the second actually, but the first I’m posting). Weather is (mostly) great lately, so I had to take a beautiful model to a beautiful place and capture it all on film.
